To ensure a personalized tutoring experience, I require a thoughtful intake process that allows myself, family, and current teacher(s) to work together to build a learning plan that supports academic growth and confidence.
This step requires simple and focused communication between the tutor, parent/guardian, student, and classroom teacher(s). This helps clarify current academic levels in addition to learning goals.
A student learning survey to build an understanding of the child’s feelings towards school and learning.
A parent/guardian survey to share insights into your child’s strengths, challenges, and learning preferences.
A teacher survey to help gather classroom-based data such as reading/math levels and other helpful observations.
Using the insights from all surveys and conversations, the tutor will create an individualized plan that will be shared with the parent/guardian and, if applicable, the student’s classroom teacher. This plan will outline areas of focus, strategies for support, and session goals.
In addition to classroom data, the tutor will conduct baseline assessments in reading, writing, and/or math. These help identify what your child has already mastered and where gaps in understanding may be occurring. This step allows for precise, targeted instruction.
Once the plan is reviewed and approved, tutoring sessions will begin. Sessions are 45–60 minutes in length and typically include:
Skill and strategy review tailored to the child’s needs
Guided practice with support and modeling
Independent practice with immediate feedback
Homework or schoolwork support (20 minutes of each session)
Writing strategies are reinforced across all subject areas, even in sessions focused on math or reading.
*It is recommended that sessions focus on one subject area to allow for deeper learning and meaningful progress. To support classroom alignment, parents are encouraged to check in periodically with their child’s teacher(s). This helps ensure that what’s happening in tutoring is translating to success at school. The tutor will adjust session plans based on teacher feedback and observed student progress.
